Why It Costs What It Costs

What you're actually paying for

A $20 charcoal kit from the hardware store will give you a number. So what's the difference?

Lab-grade instrumentation. We use continuous radon monitors (Sun Nuclear and RadonEye Pro), professionally calibrated annually. A charcoal kit is a single-point estimate. A continuous monitor gives you hourly readings and tamper detection.

A certified specialist. Hunter is an NRPP-certified Radon Measurement Specialist. That credential covers proper monitor placement, closed-house conditions, sampling protocols, and result interpretation — the parts most kit-based tests get wrong.

An in-person walkthrough. A number in an email is data. A 30-minute conversation about what the number means, whether to mitigate, and how to choose a mitigation contractor is decision-ready insight.

Frequently Asked

Pricing questions

Why is your test more expensive than a charcoal kit?

Because it's not a kit. It's a calibrated instrument, deployed and retrieved by a certified specialist, with a personal results walkthrough. If you want a $20 number with no context, a hardware-store kit works. If you want a decision-ready answer, the price reflects the depth.

Do you charge extra for outer-ring counties like Chisago or Wright?

No. The $249 flat fee applies across all 11 Twin Cities metro counties we serve.

Do you perform radon mitigation?

No. We test only. We refer to two mitigation contractors we've vetted and trust. That separation is intentional — a tester who also sells mitigation has an incentive to find a problem.

Will my home insurance cover this?

Generally no — home insurance doesn't cover environmental testing. Some flexible spending accounts (FSAs) will reimburse health-related home testing; check with your administrator.

Do you offer payment plans?

Not at the current $249 price point. For our Full Home Assessment ($2,500+), we offer split-payment options. Reach out if you have a specific situation.
